The trail starts at the old road curve on the southwest side of the parking lot near the visitor center. Follow this trail towards the Sunrise Camp. Don’t be afraid that there are no signs, the first real sign, indicating the name of the trail, can be found at about 0.5 mile from the trailhead. At this junction, the path that turns left is the Wonderland Trail, it takes you to White River. If we are looking for Shadow Lakes, we are to continue going straight to the Sunrise Camp.
At about 1.2 miles from the trailhead, the path reaches Shadow Lake. This is a nice and shallow lake that is surrounded by green meadows. Open slopes near the lake are perfect home for wildlife here.
Numerous species of birds, deer, mountain goats are frequently seen here.
From Shadow Lake, you may continue the hike or turn back. If you choose to continue, the Sunrise Camp will be in 1.8 miles. Once it was a drive-up car camping, but now is used as a walk-in tent campground. Enjoy your rest here or come back through Frozen Lake.
